The heavy beating sound drew us to a huge black-and-white shape sweeping impressively into the tree beside us. At first it was playing peak-a-boo from behind the huge beech trunk, and then suddenly it shuffled around the large tree to reveal a vivid scarlet head with a pointed top knot. There was no mistaking this spiffing male Magellanic Woodpecker that soon after had a little more subdued female in toe too...(Tierra del Fuego NP)
